Early Signs #1 & #2: Constant Thirst + Frequent Nighttime Urination
Sign #1: You’re Thirsty All the Time — Even After Drinking
When blood sugar is elevated, your kidneys work overtime to filter out the excess glucose — pulling fluid from your tissues in the process. The result is persistent, nagging thirst that doesn’t go away even after drinking plenty of water. This is called polydipsia and it’s one of the classic early signs of uncontrolled blood sugar.
Most Americans blame this on not drinking enough water. They drink more — which temporarily relieves it. But the thirst returns within hours. If you find yourself constantly refilling your water bottle and still feeling thirsty, this warrants a blood sugar check.
Sign #2: Waking Up Multiple Times at Night to Urinate
Closely connected to Sign #1 — the excess fluid your kidneys are pulling out has to go somewhere. The result is nocturia: waking up two, three, or four times per night to urinate. Many Americans over 40 assume this is just “getting older” or a bladder issue. For many, it’s their body’s first attempt to signal a blood sugar problem.
| Nighttime Urination Frequency | What to Consider |
|---|---|
| Once per night | Usually normal, especially over 50 |
| Twice per night consistently | Worth mentioning to your doctor |
| 3+ times per night | Request a fasting blood sugar test |
| 3+ times + constant daytime thirst | High priority — see doctor soon |
